Scott Joplin: Excerpts from Treemonisha for Brass Quintet

American composer Scott Joplin (1868-1917) completed his opera “Treemonisha” in 1910. The opera encompasses a wide range of musical styles and unfortunately the orchestrations have been completely lost.

This transcription for brass quintet features three movements from the opera. The instrumental Prelude to Act III alternates between sweet and tumultuous moments, the barbershop quartet We Will Rest A While provides a horn feature, and the ballet movement Frolic of The Bears is an exhilarating waltz in D minor.

Corey Sansolo is the trombonist for Axiom Brass and the Peacherine Ragtime Society Orchestra. This transcription was premiered by Axiom Brass in 2020.
