In his first sonata for trombone and piano, Alex Knutrud explores and develops music from a four-note theme based around the intervalic relationship between a perfect fourth and an augmented fourth alternating within an open fifth of distance. This alternating theme appears in both harmonic and melodic undertones, forming the basis for the entire three-movement work. Originally subtitled 'Black Lotus Vespers', much of the inspiration for exploring this came from looking at the patterns lotus petals grow as well as other floral patterns as they emerge over time.
Premiered at the 2023 ITF in Salt Lake City, this major addition to the tenor trombone repertoire is fresh, exciting, and deeply moving.
