Bill Klemm: Water Sky for Trombone and Orchestra

One great advantage to living in Alaska is that I’m often just a picture window’s view away from the wilderness’ inspiration. Water Sky gets its title from the arctic/antarctic phenomenon where open water is reflected upward onto low level clouds revealing distant navigable waters to polar explorers on the sea ice.

This work for solo trombone and orchestra is part tone poem and part concerto featuring the soaring lyrical quality of the trombone framed in the colors of the symphony orchestra. This 10 minute work is comprised of three sections that follow the mystical journey of an intrepid hunter through the wonders of the long dark night of the arctic winter to the glory of the precious little sun.
